Live wedding painting in Lyon

A live painting and a wedding invitation

The wedding planning agency Day Love Event in Lyon (France) contacted me for a wedding in early February. The bride and groom wanted two services for a wedding in Lyon:
– an illustration for the wedding invitation
– a live painting for the wedding day during the cocktail time

They had chosen a splendid wedding venue at the Intercontinental Hotel Dieu in Lyon.
They chose the exterior of the building for the invitation. And they wanted a watercolor representation.

Here is the illustration for the invitation:

The wedding venue: the Dome of the Intercontinental Hotel Dieu in Lyon

I arrived in Lyon the day before the wedding. I had to paint the interior decoration of the venue on my canvas the next day, thus I thought I could go there and do a sketch before the big day.
What impressive architecture! And that ceiling!! It’s dizzying!

This place is truly an emblem of Lyon’s heritage. 800 years of history before becoming one of the most beautiful hotels in Lyon! It was in the Middle Ages, in the 12th century, that its ancestor, the Hôpital du Pont du Rhône, was built. It changed its name during the Renaissance and became Hôpital de Notre Dame de la Pitié du Pont du Rhône. At that time, famine and plague were raging in Lyon… It was in the 18th century that the current building was built, and the Grand Hôtel Dieu took its current name. It was requisitioned as a military hospital during both World Wars by the French army.
In 2009, the hospital closed permanently, and construction work began on its transformation into a luxury hotel and shopping center.

Live painting on the Wedding Day

The bride and groom, M & I, did not want to have a ceremony or other symbolic moment of their wedding depicted in the painting. They chose to have a painting depicting a simple moment of the day, with their loved ones and the musician.
So, we can recognize the parents of the bride and groom, the bride’s grandparents, the groom’s children (from a previous marriage), the groom’s brother,
A little clarification (if you’re wondering how I recognize the bride and groom’s loved ones on their wedding day!): the bride and groom sent me photos of everyone present before the wedding. That way, I can recognize them on the big day without bothering the bride and groom!
Here’s a little photo of me during my performance:

As you can imagine with the complexity of the architecture and the number of guests to paint, I wasn’t able to finish the painting on the wedding day.
So I took it back to my studio to finish it.
You can see the final result:
